Food Technology
Food Technology at Watling View is a part of the curriculum that develops pupils ability in a wide range of areas including independence, reading and functional life skills. This is reinforced by pupils learning through tasks which include skills linked with food preparation, cooking, cleaning, washing up, following recipes / instructions and using communication skills to express likes and dislikes when it comes to food.
There are weekly Food Technology lessons timetabled for each class and a specialist Food Technology room which can be used to support the practical application of these skills. In the Lower / Middle School Food Technology is taught through a breadth of topics, so that pupils are able to reinforce learnt skills and knowledge as well as develop new skills in a wide range of areas linked to food preparation and cooking. In the Upper School, Food Technology focuses on pupils learning the process of cooking their own lunch where classes once a week decide what they are going to cook for lunch, then visit the local supermarket to buy the ingredients and follow instructions to cook their own lunch as part of a class group.
Food Technology plays an important role in the cross curricular nature of the curriculum at Watling View, for example pupils will utilise reading by following instructions and recipes, learn about healthy eating through learning about the ingredients they are using to cook and develop scientific knowledge by learning about changes of state when they cook food or put liquid in the freezer.
The school café reinforces the skills and knowledge which have been learnt during Food Technology lessons and demonstrates pupils ability to apply this knowledge to an everyday working context.
Throughout Food Technology lessons, pupils are able to demonstrate that they know and understand the process for both following instructions to prepare a meal or snack, and that they also understand the process and need to wash up after they have used equipment. Food Technology also teaches pupils how to stay safe in an environment which includes heat when cooking and sharp items when cutting. This means that Food Technology has an important role in preparing pupils for adulthood and life beyond school. We will often hear from families that their child has been able to help them in the kitchen or has been able to make part of their own breakfast or tea, something which we are very proud of our pupils for being able to do.
