Watling View School

PSHEEC

The PSHEEC curriculum is a vital component in making sure that each and every pupil at Watling View has the opportunity to develop the skills and awareness of how to be an active citizen in society including making a positive contribution to the life of the school, local community and at home. Learning happens both within discreet PSHEEC lessons as well as carefully planned cross curriculum opportunities meaning that pupils are continually exposed to learning which reinforce learnt knowledge from within PSHEEC lessons alongside the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

The PSHEEC curriculum follows different overarching themes on a half termly basis. In Lower / Middle School the themes include; Myself and My Future, Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being, Keeping Myself Safe, Healthy Choices, Relationships and Sex Education and Our World.  These themes are then broken down in to half termly topics, which aim to provide opportunities for pupils in Lower / Middle School to learn about these different areas both within and outside of the classroom. In Upper School themes include; Self-Awareness, Relationships: Managing My Feelings, Self-Care, Safety, Well-being and Managing Risk, Healthy Life Styles, Relationships, Changing and Growing and The World I Live In. These themes are broken down in to smaller half termly topics and are designed to build on the skills and knowledge that has been learnt previously and develop further understanding about what it means to be an active citizen and to become prepared for adulthood and life beyond Watling View.

At Watling View, we recognise that wider curriculum opportunities are important to fully meet the aims of the PSHEEC curriculum. We place a great emphasis on providing rich experiences for pupils which stretch beyond the academic, these can include trips and visits to the local community, performers visiting school, work with mainstream schools, attending sporting events, community projects, Travel Training, swimming at a local leisure centre and theme days.

Pupils learn about careers and careers education through PSHEEC. In Early Years pupils will role play different jobs and learn about equipment different jobs require through play. Pupils in Lower / Middle School learn about different jobs continuing to learn through practical hands on experiences as well as learning about what different jobs are. Pupils in the Upper School learn about careers education both through the PSHEEC curriculum including developing an awareness of skills they have and different types of jobs which need those skills. As well as through PSHEEC pupils in the Upper School also have discreet careers education lessons.

Relationships and Sex Education for pupils at Watling View is both taught in PSHEEC lessons as well as natural opportunities for teaching and learning happening throughout the curriculum. Relationships and emotional regulation teaching and learning is taught on a day to day basis so pupils can learn and demonstrate they know what it means to have happy positive relationships, a sense of belonging and how they can remain regulated in their day to day life.

The vast and rich experiences and opportunities provided to pupils at Watling View alongside the focus of making pupils prepared for adulthood, means that individuals are confident learners who positively overcome challenges and demonstrate a desire to both learn and play a full and active role in being active citizens both in Watling View and beyond.
