At Watling View School we use Read Write Inc as our phonics programme.
At Watling View, we understand and place value on the teaching of Early Reading, we therefore recognise that a highly structured, consistent phonics programme supports students learning of reading.
At Watling View, we use the phonics system 'Read Write Inc', which is implemented with adaptations to suit students with Special Educational Needs. When completing phonics work, students are split into groups of similar ability in order to ensure students make progress at a pace suited to their developmental stage.
Read Write Inc firstly teaches students to hear the sounds of 40+ graphemes and begin to blend them into words before teaching students to read fluently with good comprehension. Students begin to learn phonics when they are judged to be ready to do so, by class teachers in conjunction with the Literacy Coordinator, regardless of age. Students are introduced to the early reading materials associated with Read Write Inc within Early Years or Lower Middle school. As students get older, they are introduced to 'Fresh Start', which follows the same programme, but includes age appropriate resources for the students to follow.
When teaching phonics, a range of multi-sensory materials are used, alongside Read Write Inc resources to support students development of understanding concrete concepts.
